A mangrove leaf comes to rest upon a mud flat rippled by waves in the retreating tide off White Horse Key. This muck filling the shallow bottom of the Ten Thousand Islands is largely remnants of decaying mangrove leaves that provide the base of the food chain in this rich estuarine environment.
